To highlight AKC's National Dog Week, September 13-19, the American Kennel Club (AKC) will host its fourth annual canine extravaganza "Dog Day Afternoon" on Saturday, September 12th, noon to 4:00 pm, in the northwest corner of New York City's Madison Square Park. As America's leading purebred dog authority, the AKC is sponsoring the event to kick off the national week-long celebration of our canine companions.

Thousands of dog lovers and their dogs visit this free event each year to see the riveting center ring demonstrations, discover breeds they never knew existed and meet with canine experts from several AKC dog clubs and other organizations.

The center ring will showcase agility demonstrations and obedience presentations. Canine Good Citizen® Testing will be administered throughout the day, and all dogs completing the tests successfully, will go home with a Canine Good Citizen® Certificate. Members of AKC dog clubs and other organizations, including veterinarians, groomers and training experts will be in booths surrounding the center ring ready to answer your questions. Costumed characters will hand out special gifts to the kids. A face painter and caricaturist will be present to entertain children and adults. The first 500 spectators will receive a free gift bag containing an AKC Mug, coloring book and a variety of useful material. The AKC booth will be on hand to supply helpful information and other goodies, as well as answer questions about registering your dog or becoming involved in AKC events.

Rain date for the event is Sunday, September 13th at the same time.
